2017 Fantasy Football Quarterback Rankings and Stock Scores

With free agency and the draft in the rearview and offseason workouts underway, we present our 2017 quarterback rankings.

The 2017 Quarterback Landscape

We’ll dive much deeper into this in a separate article, but the quarterback landscape can be described in one word: deep.

There are legitimately 18 quarterbacks who grade a B- or higher who I’d be comfortable starting, meaning this will be yet another year where waiting makes sense… almost all the time.

At a certain point, the near guaranteed 23-25 weekly points of the elite Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers makes complete sense. If either of these guys in lingering in the fourth along the likes of, say, Allen Robinson or Golden Tate, screw “opportunity cost” and “positional depth.” Rodgers averaged nearly 6 points more a week than QB6 Dak Prescott, and the 94 point difference between those two is far greater than the 30 point difference between Prescott and Cam Newton, last year’s QB18.

Those are really the only two I see worth jumping on before a quality WR2 or RB2 option. Yet, if I’ve secured two solid RBs and WRs, and believe a quality WR3 could fall in Round 6, sign me up for Drew Brees and his near-guaranteed 4,500 yards and 30+ TDs. Maybe even Matt Ryan a round later.

However, by this stage, I’m likely playing the waiting game. Like I mentioned, there’s 18 potential starters… though I’m really aiming to land at least one top-13 guy, if not two to pair up floors and ceilings. A Derek Carr / Philip Rivers and Cam Newton / Russell Wilson combination would be an ideal combination.

Still, if I’ve missed on the elite “Top Four” tier and as long as skill position talent exists, I’m loading up on my WRs and RBs until roughly 10 or so QBs have already gone. Most likely, this means Round 9 or 10 is where I’ll begin considering signal-callers, but I’ll happily roll Tyrod Taylor out in Round 12 if exciting rookie running backs or penny stock receivers are falling to maximize my bench.

So, in short: go elite early, especially if you like your ability to back fill late in drafts or on waivers… or wait until there’s no longer an RB or WR who genuinely intrigues you.
