Fantasy Football Stock Report: NFL Wide Receivers catching all the news today

With the major news of Josh Gordon being reinstated today(check out The Wolf’s article from earlier today for implications), wide receivers have stolen the spotlight here at RSJ. A bunch of key names ended up on the preseason PUP list today which could have major implications going forward. The duo of Patriots receivers could be the most effected by this seeing as they have to deal with a new quarterback for Weeks 1-4 in Jimmy Garoppolo. Getting timing down and building strong connections with your quarterback are extremely important. With Edelman and Amendola spending time on the sidelines, that could have implications on their fantasy potential early on in the season.

Dion Lewis and Jordy Nelson are both coming back from ACL injuries, but should be ready to go Week 1. We will continue to monitor both players, but keep a heavier eye on Dion Lewis as we’ve mentioned in our initial podcast regarding our higher levels of caution.

“The early favorite to do so is C.J. Anderson, Denver’s charismatic top tailback whose new contract and late-season surge coincided with coach Gary Kubiak’s desire to put more emphasis on the running game. Anderson needs to stay healthy and shake off his historically slow starts to get the offense on track. He has the potential to be a 1,500-yard rusher.”

Cameron Wolfe – Denver Post

CJ Anderson was supposed to be a huge breakout guy last year and left virtually every fantasy owner who used a high pick on him very disappointed. With the departures of both Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler, one would expect Anderson and the running game to be given a huge workload. Denver ponied up (ha, get it) and matched Anderson’s offer sheet, so they obviously have big plans for him going forward.

“But he never got a chance to build on that. Dorsett broke his leg midseason and had surgery for the first time in his life. Now Luck is back, and healthy. Dorsett is back, and healthy. All those balls that used to go to Coby Fleener? They could be headed for Phillip Dorsett this fall, the speedy slot receiver who’s in line for a breakout season.”

Zak Keefer – Indy Star

Dorsett is someone many people have targeted and hyped coming into this season. The former first rounder is expected to have a big impact in the explosive Indy offense with a healthy Andrew Luck. The departures of Andre Johnson and Coby Fleener leave a good number of targets to still be distributed. Dorsett is someone to target in the middle rounds that could return huge dividends.

Not strictly fantasy:

  • Doug Pederson wants Carson Wentz to be ready to go Week 1 even though he’s not the starter
  • Tom Jackson is leaving ESPN. Bill Belichick is likely pleased
  • LeGarrette Blount avoided the PUP list after a hip injury. The goal line back is a key piece to the New England offense to compliment the shifty Dion Lewis.
