Week 8 Fantasy Football Rankings Update Log

Saturday – Updated Week 8 Fantasy Football Rankings Log

Rashee Rice RETURNS, but Pat Surtain II is also back

Ranking impact: Rice UP to WR2 territory, but with a lower floor than usual. Xavier Worthy DOWN slightly.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid confirmed Rice will return against Denver after missing two games with hamstring and knee injuries. Rice progressed from limited practices Wednesday and Thursday to a full session Friday and carries no final injury designation.

Through four games, Rice has recorded 13 catches on 17 targets for 190 yards and one TD. He also scored against Denver in Week 1, catching both targets for 19 yards and a touchdown. The Chiefs desperately need his presence: Kansas City scored just 25 combined points in the two games Rice missed, including a miserable three-point outing against Seattle in Week 7.

However, Denver gets a massive defensive boost of its own: All-Pro CB Patrick Surtain II is returning after three straight full practices. He missed time with an ankle injury sustained in Week 4.

Rice’s return could return his target-hog upside, but the brutal matchup, possibility of Surtain coverage, and lingering soft-tissue concerns make him a riskier WR2 than usual. Worthy’s target ceiling takes a hit, while Mahomes gets his most reliable underneath weapon back, but is still a recommended SIT in Week 8.

Saquon Barkley CLEARED, but significant reinjury concerns remain

Ranking impact: Barkley remains an RB2, but carries major in-game injury risk. Jaydon Blue is a speculative insurance option.

Barkley is officially off the injury report for Sunday night’s game against Washington. However, his health remains concerning.

After missing two games with a hamstring injury, Barkley returned Monday against Dallas, rushing for 62 yards and a TD on just seven carries before being limited by a back issue. He explained that the back trouble stemmed from compensating for his injured hamstring.

Barkley then missed practice Wednesday and Thursday before returning in a limited capacity Friday.

Speaking to Eagles reporters, Barkley acknowledged that he is still working through physical issues, but said he had a productive week of rehabilitation and felt ready to practice.

The determination is encouraging, but a hamstring aggravation followed by limited practice on a short week is a real red flag. There’s also no guarantee Philadelphia will give him his customary workload, especially if he encounters another setback.

Keep Barkley in starting lineups where necessary, but consider him a volatile RB2 rather than a locked-in RB1. Blue is worth monitoring as insurance, although his workload isn’t guaranteed.

Carnell Tate OUT, Wan’Dale Robinson gets a bump

Ranking impact: Wan’Dale Robinson UP; Calvin Ridley and Elic Ayomanor also benefit but aren’t fantasy viable

Tennessee has ruled out rookie WR Carnell Tate with a shoulder injury after he missed practice all week. Tate has emerged as the Titans’ leading receiver, making his absence especially significant for a passing attack already lacking consistency.

Wan’Dale Robinson is among the biggest potential beneficiaries, with more short-area targets available against Cincinnati. The Bengals matchup creates an attractive volume opportunity, as the Titans will likely be chasing points all afternoon.

Calvin Ridley is also questionable with a hip injury. If Ridley is limited or inactive, Robinson’s target projection rises even further, while Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike could see expanded routes and opportunities.

Robinson gets a bump into the PPR FLEX conversation, with his ceiling rising if Ridley cannot suit up.

RJ Harvey OUT, Jonah Coleman set for expanded role

Ranking impact: Jonah Coleman UP significantly to RB25; J.K. Dobbins also benefits.

Denver ruled out RJ Harvey after the rookie suffered a knee injury during the practice week. Harvey was limited Thursday but missed Friday entirely, leaving Jonah Coleman and J.K. Dobbins positioned for additional opportunities against Kansas City.

Coleman has already carved out a rotational role and now has a chance to expand his share of the offense, particularly if Denver leans on a committee approach.

When asked about the possibility of an increased workload, Coleman told Broncos reporter Zac Stevens:

“I’m ready for any opportunity I’m given. Whenever I’m out there on the field, I’m going to give the team my all.”

The enthusiasm is encouraging, but this isn’t necessarily a straightforward bell-cow promotion. Dobbins remains involved and could absorb additional early-down or short-yardage work.

Coleman is an appealing FLEX option with breakout potential, while Dobbins also deserves a boost with Harvey unavailable.

Emeka Egbuka OUT, Chris Godwin, Tez Johnson and Ted Hurst rise

Ranking impact: Godwin UP, with Johnson and Hurst gaining deeper-league appeal.

The Buccaneers ruled out Emeka Egbuka for their Week 8 matchup against Atlanta. While Egbuka has cleared concussion protocol, his lingering foot injury will keep him sidelined.

This creates another opportunity for Chris Godwin to operate as Baker Mayfield’s primary receiving weapon. Godwin has recently commanded significant involvement, with one fantasy usage tracker crediting him with an 85% snap share and 21% target share in the relevant recent sample. Of course, Godwin also looks completely cooked and has done next-to-nothing with the added work.

Tez Johnson and Ted Hurst also stand to benefit from additional routes and target opportunities as Tampa Bay searches for production behind Godwin. Johnson scored last week, while Hurst put up a complete donut.

In all honesty, I’m still unlikely to rely on any Bucs pass-catcher. Still, last week’s results without Egbuka are unlikely to indicate what to expect in Week 8, given how absurdly run-heavy the Bucs were with a massive lead all game (just 11 pass attempts)

DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks officially OUT, Eagles pass catchers get opportunity

Ranking impact: Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper UP. Dallas Goedert also benefits

Philadelphia will be without both DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) against Washington on Sunday Night Football. Britain Covey is also OUT, leaving the Eagles dangerously thin at wide receiver.

This creates an opening for rookie Makai Lemon, Darius Cooper, and maybe veteran Marquise “Hollywood” Brown to handle expanded responsibilities. The lack of established receiving options also increases the potential importance of Dallas Goedert in the passing game, who faces the second most-generous run defense.

Lemon is particularly interesting as a speculative upside play after “breaking out” on MNF (7 receptions on 8 targets for 67 receiving yards and 1 receiving touchdown). He’s a Top-30 WR for me in Week 8 Fantasy Football.

Goedert deserves a target-expectation bump, while Lemon, Cooper, and Brown belong on the deeper FLEX radar. With three receivers sidelined, keep monitoring Philadelphia’s personnel plans heading into Sunday night.

Friday – Updated Week 8 Fantasy Football Rankings Log

AJ Brown Not Practicing Friday, Questionable for Week 8 Fantasy Football

Brown missed both Thursday and Friday with a new knee tweak, so Vrabel’s “Questionable” feels optimistic. Brown’s knee injury was reported as a “flare-up” from a previous knee injury, not great! “We’ll see when he comes in tomorrow, and we’ll make a decision,” Vrabel said.

I have sent Brown plummeting down the rankings, with bumps to Hunter Henry, Demario Douglas, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism, who is a solid desperation stab this week. Williams profiles more as a boom-bust option, and I prefer Chism, who’s been steadier when called upon.

Jonathan Taylor to Play & See “Full Workload”

There were rumblings Jonathan Taylor might rest on Sunday, but HC Shane Steichen put those to rest, confirming Taylor will play and see the “same workload as usual.” The matchup is still brutal vs. the Jags, and I still worry somewhat that Taylor might be leaned upon less. Nonetheless, I gave him a slight bump and am only 3-4 spots below ECR now (instead of 7+)

Jeremiyah Love Will Play, Ripe Opportunity vs. Cowboys

Hopefully, Jeremiyah Love‘s two week absence helped him heal up and regain the explosivity that made him such an exciting prospect. The matchup is ripe against a generous Cowboys defense routinely getting gashed.

Beyond his own efficiency, volume remains a question, as Tyler Allgeier has practiced in back-to-back days. Plus, Bam Knight has filled in admirably as the lead rusher in back-to-back games, and may have played himself into a role.

I’m +2 ECR on Love at the moment, and if Allgeier is downgraded or we get positive buzz on Love’s workload, that could rise.

Lamar Jackson IN for Week 8 Fantasy Football, Shoot Out Brewing

The 54.5 Over Under may hit just yet! Lamar Jackson has practiced in full all week, and will return to square off with Josh Allen. This is an especially nice boost for Zay Flowers, who’s been hyper-targeted by Lamar in their time together this season, and is my No.4 WR in Week8 Fantasy Football Rankings.

Derrick Henry will also benefit after facing dreadfully stacked boxes the past two weeks. He now gets a Top-3 matchup, and should feast. The Buy Low window is about to slam shut. Wheels up for both teams in Week 8!

Tyler Warren “Good to Go” for Week 8 Fantasy Football

He slides in at TE11, just below Hunter Henry for me

Saquon Barkley – Practicing Friday, but Risk of Reaggravation Remains High

Saquon Barkley returned to Friday’s practice. With Dameon Pierce on IR, the Eagles certainly need Barkley, but the risk of an injury aggravation is definitely scary. Still, Barkley is now my RB25

Others to Watch:

  • Carnell Tate did not practice all week and could miss Week 8
  • Emeka Egbuka has gotten in limited practices this week, but was not spotted on Friday. Greg Auman speculated he will “be ruled out again.” Stay tuned.

Thursday – Updated Week 8 Fantasy Football Rankings Log

Saquon Barkley and Devonta Smith Not Practicing Wednesday (but Barkley “great”)

Saquon Barkley did not practice to open Week 8. According to Adam Schefter, Barkley said “his hamstring came out great” and “he doesn’t believe his back issue will keep him out.” He only could manage 9 touches Monday, making Barkley a huge risk in Week 8 Fantasy, even if he suits up. He’s fallen hard in the ranks for now.

Additionally, Dameon Pierce has been placed on the IR. If Saquon misses the game, the next man up is *checks notes* Eli Mitchell (LOL!) and/or Jaydon Blue (ROFL!). Someone here will still be a starting RB and thus likely fantasy viable, but man it’s getting ugly.

Devonta Smith also remains out of practice as the team treads very cautiously with him in the midst of a lost season.

Jeremiyah Love Returns to Practice, Tyler Allgeier Not Practicing

The Cardinals backfield will be important to monitor with a ripe matchup vs. the Cowboys on the docket. As of now, Jeremiyah Love is practicing, while Tyler Allgeier missed Wednesday with a toe ailment. Bam Knight remains in play as a streamer if one of these two guys misses time, but otherwise is droppable.

Jonathan Taylor: Could Sit Ahead of Likely Trade

Jonathan Taylor remains among the most likely stars to be traded ahead of Tuesday’s deadline. As such, there’s rumblings he may be held out. If we get word he’s been traded or will sit, I will adjust, but even if he plays, Taylor feels a lot riskier. The matchup is already brutal, the line has lost key pieces, and Taylor might be on a snap count if he plays at all. I am treading more cautiously for now and tracking this story throughout the week:
